A Morning on the River Orwell: Residents Take to the Water
5 October 2026

Residents enjoyed a memorable morning on the River Orwell, taking in local landmarks, wildlife and views towards Felixstowe Docks — all made possible by the wonderful volunteers at the Woolverstone Project.
A few of our residents recently swapped dry land for the water and enjoyed a fantastic morning exploring the River Orwell by boat.
From spotting local wildlife and passing familiar landmarks to seeing some impressive vessels along the way, there was plenty to see and talk about throughout the trip.
Most importantly, the outing gave residents an opportunity to enjoy somewhere different, learn more about the local area and reminisce about memories connected to places along the river.
The whole experience was made possible by the Woolverstone Project and its wonderful volunteers, who generously give their time to help people get out onto the water.
Setting Off on the River Orwell
We headed out at around 10:30am, ready for a morning on the river.
Our journey took us along the River Orwell towards Felixstowe, travelling far enough to see Felixstowe Docks in the distance before making our way back towards the Orwell Bridge.
Along the way, the volunteers shared their knowledge about the river, the different boats we could see and the surrounding area, giving residents plenty of interesting information throughout the journey.
Plenty to See Along the Way
There was certainly no shortage of things to look out for.
We enjoyed seeing the different houseboats along the river, passed Pin Mill and took in views around Levington Marina.
There was also some impressive activity on the water.
One particular highlight was seeing the famous Waverley paddle steamer, as well as the Reimerswaal dredger.
For residents interested in boats and the activity taking place on the river, there was always something new appearing around the next bend.
Cormorants, Turnstones and River Wildlife
It wasn't only the boats that caught everyone's attention.
Residents enjoyed watching cormorants diving beneath the water in search of their lunch, disappearing below the surface before appearing again moments later.
We were also fascinated by the number of turnstones around us, with the little birds regularly landing on the boats.
Being able to sit back and watch the wildlife from the water made the experience even more special.
Bringing Back Memories
One of the loveliest parts of days out like this is the conversations and memories they can bring back.
As we travelled along the river, familiar places prompted residents to share stories and experiences from years gone by.
For Jill, the area was particularly familiar. She remembered regularly travelling there when taking her children to school.
Despite knowing the area so well, there was one thing she had never done before — been out on a boat!
That made seeing somewhere so familiar from a completely different perspective particularly special.
Activities like this aren't simply about going somewhere for the day. They can provide opportunities to reminisce, share stories and reconnect with places that have played a part in people's lives.
A Huge Thank You to the Woolverstone Project
Our morning on the river was facilitated by the Woolverstone Project, and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved.
The volunteers were fantastic, giving their time to make the experience possible while sharing their knowledge and making sure everyone could enjoy the journey.
Their enthusiasm and kindness helped make it a genuinely memorable morning for our residents.
We set off at around 10:30am and returned at approximately 12:45pm, having packed an incredible amount into just over two hours on the water.
Making New Memories
At Stour Valley Care Group, we believe activities should be about much more than simply keeping busy.
Whether it's a trip on the River Orwell, visiting a local café or enjoying an activity within the home, we want residents to have opportunities to experience new things, revisit familiar places, socialise and continue making memories.
This particular outing managed to do all of those things.
From the Waverley and the wildlife to the stories shared along the way, it was a fantastic morning — and certainly one we will be talking about for some time!
A huge thank you once again to the Woolverstone Project and its wonderful volunteers for making it possible.
You can keep up with more resident activities, events and days out on our latest news page.
